Geomagnetic storm is possible to induce geomagnetically induced current (GIC) and many illeffects in high-voltage power grid. Detail studies about the distribution, amplitude and effects of GIC in power grid are very important. Based on the necessity of GIC's studies in China, this article discussed some basic theories, conditions of GIC's coming into being, simulation steps and notice items, etc.; Through analyses on theories and methods, it is convincible that The Plane Waves method is appropriate for analysis or simulation on Earth surface potential (ESP), which is pivotal to study GIC in Chinese power grid; the article recommends a new theory, which is improved Plane Wave method, to analyze GIC more accurately and programmed "analysis software on EPS of High-Voltage transmission lines", and now, it is an important tool to analyze the GIC of power grid. By software, developed to study the ESP, and Canadian PSCAD/EMTDC, this article has some simulation analyses on the GIC problems of Yang (Cheng)-Jang (Su) power system. The results of instance showed that the ways, provided in this article to study GIC in power grid are appropriate and effective, besides, some prevention and cure strategies are presented.
