During the course of the seismic design for the bridge pier's ductility, the seismic effect to the shear strength is concerned deeply. But until now, there are many different viewpoints for the calculation method of the shear strength, and the theory or formulations for the shear strength specified in the specifications of different countries are not same. Especially in China, there is no specific provision for the shear strength of the bridge pier in the specification of seismic design for highway engineering, there is only formulation for the shear strength of beam in the specifications of bridge and culvert design. So, the shear performance of the bridge pier under the seismic effect is studied in this paper in order to provide theoretical basis and reference of calculation. The bridge pier models with different stirrup space are designed and the Pushover and pseudo-static experiment are carried out for them. On the ground of the results of the experiment, the failure modul, the strain of reinforced bar and deformation are analyzed; the shear strength of the bridge pier models are calculated by using the formulation provided by ATC-32, Caltrans, NZS3101, and reference [32] and then the result of calculation and experiment are compared, so the virtue or the defection of every formulation become evident; with aid of the commercial finite-element software ANSYS, the finite-element analysis of the bridge pier models are carried out and the result is compared with the result of the experiment, furthermore the two are almost same, so ANSYS can be used for the design of sear strength; the data coming from the fiber grating sensor is compared with the data coming from resistance sensor, and the two kind of well corresponding data prove the feasibility of the fiber grating sensor applied to the civil engineering.
