In earthquake, there is many disasters caused by failure of the bridge piers and the disasters are severe. Moreover, in China, the bridges built many years ago were designed almost without considering seismic effect. So, the study of the seismic performance and failure model of the bridge piers built many years ago is very significant. In this study, three kinds of bridge piers with different stirrup space are designed according to the design of some bridge piers built many years ago and the seismic performance of them are studied by Pushover experiment and pseudo-static experiment. Being limited by the experimental equipment, the bridge piers are scaled to 1/4 times of the original one. The results of the experiment including deformation, hysteretic loop, energy consumption, stretch of the crack and the failure model are given and analyzed in the paper.Basing on the results of the experiment, the experimental pier models are numerically analyzed with the finite element software MSC. Marc. In the paper, the kind of the element, the material, the mode of the load, the method of solution and the parameter used above are introduced in detail. The input work is completed by use of the procedures and the user subroutines provided by Marc. Then the result of analysis and the result of experiment are compared, so the validity of the finite element analysis and the rationality of the parameter used in the analysis are proved. Evaluating the seismic performance of the bridge piers from the result of the analysis and experiment. In the last part of the paper, the result of analysis with different the discount coefficient of shear modul are given and compared in order to evaluating the effect of the coefficient. On the ground of the result, what range the different value of the coefficient is suitable for is discussed. The achievement of this paper can be referenced for the measure of seismic reinforcement.
