With the quick development of computer science, multi-agent system (MAS) is playing a more and more important role in artificial intelligent and computer science. The application of MAS is now attracting interests of more and more researchers from many subjects.MAS have the ability to deal with the cooperation in dynamic, distributing and opening environment. Also, it has particular advantage on solving complex problems with characteristic of distributing in different space. Therefor, project constructing machinery groups based on MAS has appeared, and has been used in attempering of construction process.This paper is supported by two items of Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China, "Implementing Scheme Research on Intelligent Construction Machinery Groups"(No. 2001AA422011) and "Intelligence and Manufacture Informationization of the Construction Machinery of Road Surface"(No. 2003AA430030). At the base of prophase research on this item, we have made further research on system architecture of machine groups in road construction. This paper aims at consummating the research of system and pushing it into application. The main research works are as follows.This paper summarized the development and application of the MAS theory, introduced MAS theory into the research of the construction machine groups, and consummated the multi-layered, distributed architecture of MAS.A hierarchical MAS model is set up in this paper. Then we described the model by four models: organization model, function model, BDI model, and communication model.This paper discussed the origin and development of knowledge system and the method of building knowledge system for the system of intelligent constructing machinery group. We combine knowledge system with the relationship database. The storage and management of the knowledge base were both brought into the database management system. Thus the exploiture of the knowledge system was made easier. We set up the reasoning mechanism that was based onrules to imitate the thinking of expert and solve the problem of attempering and management in the process of the construction.Based on the research mentioned above, we accomplished the united laboratory test and the demonstration project.
