China is an ancient country with 5000-thousand - year historical sites spreaded around the land. People study the lives and social achievements, and search the originality of the culture based on these historical sites. Whereas, for those precious historical sites, we must take certain measures to preserve them, including building some protective buildings which should meet the needs of exhibition and at the same time minimize the ruin of the surroundings and the historical sites. From the perspectives of the preservation and exhibition functions of the historical remains museum, this thesis intends to make some useful conclusions based on the study of many protective buildings and historical sites at home and abroad.The main explainary frame of the thesis is "conception", "explanation", and "conclusion". Thethesis is divided into three parts----- concepts, planning &design, practice. In the chapter of"concepts", many basic concepts like historical remains, museum, historical remains museum and related knowledge are stated. The second chapter of "planning & design" explains such questions like the exhibition, space design and building light of the museum. The last chapter tells the practice of the design theory of historical remains museum based on the Preservation Planning & Design of Hanyangling Mausoleum.The thesis combines the study and rearches materials together and emphasizes on the study of the international museums. It also studies some cases of China's preservation of historical sites and then states some related technical information. The thesis proposes two ways of study— design & study based on planning, design & study based on history. The important parts of the theis are in black letters, and many pictures are used as a clue for the reader to have a better understanding and imagination of some concepts.
