Study On The Feature Of Dong Da Jie Street Commercial Space

There have been quite some achievements in the protection of Ming dynasty urban space structure and some important historical monuments in the old city area of Xi'an, but as a whole, the old city form is suffering gradual but serious deteriorating. Xi'an is growing more and more identical with other cities. Developing and changing of a city is inevitable, but how to solve the contradiction between protection and development becomes quite urgent now.Dong Da Jie street has beening one of the most vital commercial area in Xi'an since it's first built during late Qing Dinersty or early period of MinGuo.Comparing to three other main steets in the old city area of Xi'an that have beening reconstructed successively, Dong Da Jie street certainly has its own special features which make it apparently different and so attractive.This paper ventures to find out those specialties in commercial space form of this area and the shoppings take place here,which differentiaed Dong Da Jie street from other commercial area in Xi'an,and to discuss how to build some continual connections with the past during the future urban development process.Firstly,this paper focuses on the evlution of Dong Da Jie commercial street,and also analysisescertain factors that may affect its formation,and the key factor among these-the economic factor——determines its development.This paper points out mat the formation and evolution of the commercial space have their own undeniable reasons.Secondly, this paper continues with an analysis on three separate ways: the block features of the Dong Da Jie commercial area, which includes the plan, the facade and the typology of the commercial space; the street, which includes the feature of the street view, the scale, the commercial system structure along the street and the location of its elements; the shopping activity.Lastly, with the above analysis, this paper concludes with a suggestion to establish a scale controlling system in the commercial area of old city area, the structure and items of which are set up according to the analysis of historical commercial space and the activities, and points out that it is essential to protect a vanishing kind of traditional commercial space, and also,to maintain the diversity of the urban commercial space and diversify the ways the people shopping, the ways they living.
