This thesis is based on the theory about old town renewal and new town development and on the theory of urban spatial structure evolution. Integrating those theories, it analyzes the mechanisms of the interaction between the old town and the new town. After that, the empirical analysis about the experience of other different cities is taken. Finally the case of Nanjing is treated as the main example. Summarizing the characteristics of spatial structure evolution and analyzing the questions of current development mode in Nanjing, the thesis expounds the appropriate development mode of future Nanjing and tries to give specific measures to realize it. There are five parts in this thesis. The preface clarifies the research background, actuality, study content, intention and methods. The second chapter starts with the defining of the concepts related. Then it sums up the classification and function of old town and new town. Finally the concept of interaction between them is put forward. The third chapter explains the development under the concentration and decentration and on the basis of it, the elements and mechanisms is analyzed. The fourth chapter mainly gives us the examples of interation between old town and new town, including Guangzhou and Changshu in China, Paris of France and London of England. The fifth chapter especially studies the case of Nanjing with the theories and experiences above. The questions of urban spatial structure and condition of interaction in Nanjing are discussed. Through that, the measures about interaction between old town and new town are given aiming to fit the future development in Nanjing.
