A Study On The Morphological Development Of Modern Jinan City Since 1840

The study on urban morphology is one of the important foundations, which can help to guide a healthy urban development. Nowadays, China is in a period of rapid urbanization and economy development. With the increase of urban population, urban areas expand quickly. Consequently, there is a fast urban morphological evolution mainly made by urban sprawl and urban restructure. In view of these and the deficiency of research on regional center cities, the thesis selects Jinan, Shandong Province as a case study.In the perspective of urban spatial exploitation, the thesis tries not only to find out the processes, features, problems and reasons of Jinan morphological evolution since 1840, but also to study the potential relationship between the urban morphological evolution and the development of the society and economy of the city. And it aims at concluding the regularity of urban morphological evolution of Jinan. Furthermore, in order to provide a reference for today's urban construction of the city, the thesis discusses the development, regulation, control and optimization of Jinan's future urban morphology.The thesis includes five chapters. The introduction chapter discusses concepts of urban morphology, developments of theories on urban morphology , the scope, background, current situation, contribution, focus, framework, process and research method of the thesis. The second chapter briefly introduces Jinan's situation, history and urban characteristics. Chapter Three and Four expound the evolution of Jinan urban morphology in the period of 1840 to 1948, 1949 to 2002. Both analysis structures are basically the same. The first part studies Jinan's urban morphology changes in stages, based on the differences in the socio-economic political backgrounds. The second part introduces the time and processes of urban morphological evolution of Jinan. The third part of study is focused on the spatial and functional characteristics of urban morphological evolution, the transformation of urban structure, the change of urban landscape. Finally, the thesis analyses the impetus of urban morphological evolution in detail and concludes the problems and revelation of it.In conclusion, based on the analysis of urban morphological evolution in Jinan since 1840, Chapter Five summarizes two modes of urban morphological evolution: one is the "Spillover—Echo", the other is the "New town—Cooperation". Then, confronting the current situation, Chapter Five provides discussions on the development pattern of Jinan's future urban morphology, the construction of new city, the regulation of urban structure, the pectination of central urban space, the maintenance and development of urban characteristics. All these are based on the regularity of Jinan urban morphological evolution.
