This article is a study on "Zhuangxiu Culture" in mass society. But it's hard to translate "zhuangxiu" to English with single word, because it has multiply meanings concluding decoration, equipment fixing and design of interior space. So I prefer to use "Interior Culture" to substitute it. What I want is to argue that the interior culture has been strongly influenced both by popular culture and architecture, and change to a mass production with consumerism. The main aspects of this trend can be highlighted in these key words: eclecticism, scenic, collage, virtual reality, superficial and so on. I also focus on specific topics include: relationships among craftsman, public and elitism and history of taste and axiology, communication system in architecture. Media analysis will act as a main tool to examine many aspects of interior culture, and will be classified to three sorts: communication, expression and representation. This article can be seen as rather theoretical than practical. And I develop a critical method called "Space-Media Analysis" substituting the conventional way of "Style-Manner Analysis" in China.
