From the vehicle coming into being, the fuel consumption as one of the important performance is the focus of the vehicle technologist. The paper rely on thetask of China Automobile Technique and Research Centre (CATARC)-theresearch of fuel consumption on the road of the representative city. This paper has mainly discussed the method of establishing the mode of fuel consumption on the road of the representative city.First, the paper introduces the development of fuel consumption real-time measuring system on road. On the board of the current fuel consumption measuring instrument, we have developed the on-broad driving-cycle trace system (OBDCTS), that is the combination of velocity trace system for driving-cycle recurring and the gathering system base on the FLOWTRONIC fuel consumption instrument. The system can be apply any setting driving-cycle and fuel consumption measuring on road or laboratory, and the can actualize the recurring and tracing of different driving-cycle.Second, the paper introduces the fundamental of the carbon-balance fuel consumption measuring method. After fuel combusting in the engine, the total carbon mass in exhaust gas and in the fuel is equal according to the conservation of mass. The paper also introduce the different formula on the standard of Japan, America and Europe. The mainly factors for the fuel consumption measuring in laboratory include load setting of chassis dynamometer, test cycle, test inertia and cooling fan.The paper's mainly work include two aspect. First in the laboratory, the POLO1.4AT vehicle process the driving cycles of Europe ECE+EUDC, Chinese representative city synthesis and high-speed each for three times on the chassis dynamometer. We can get the correlation and correlative coefficient through the measured fuel consumption data from the fuel consumption instrument and carbon-balance methods. In the low-speed phase of driving cycle, the measured fuel consumption from the fuel consumption instrument is about 5% higher than from the carbon-balance method; In the high-speed phase of driving cycle, the measured fuel consumption from the fuel consumption instrument is about 2% higher than from the carbon-balance method. Second in the Tong-Xian testing ground, the POLO1.4AT vehicle also process the driving cycles of Europe ECE+EUDC, Chinese representative city synthesis and high-speed each for three times on the testing road. We can get the measured fuel consumption from the fuel consumption instrument on the road is about 15-20% higher than from the carbon-balance method in the laboratory. The correlative coefficient is according with the data of world fuel consumption standard which is about 19.05%.The paper also introduces the applying instance of the fuel consumption realtime measuring system on road on the hybrid electric vehicle and big passenger car, which prove the system more adaptability and stability.
