In this paper, the 3D nonlinear FEM static analysis of Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) was performed based on analyzing the constitutive models of rockfill and the basic principles of contact element. The author compared the 3-D nonlinear FEM stress and strain between void and no-void by deleting element, at the same time, and drew several valuable conclusions after analyzing the void on the different sections. The main contents are listed as following:1. In order to predict rationally the stress and strain behavior of CFRD, the theoretical and practical analysis on the constitutive models of rockfilled was performed. The Nanshui model was applied in the stress-strain analysis of CFRD.2. Thickness element, which was put forward by Zong-ze Yin, was applied between the two different materials in order to simulate their real contact based on comparing and analyzing the different contact constitutive models and the different contact elements, and the definability of element thickness was illuminated in detail.3. Void was simulated with deleting element as analyzing void of concrete face, and the grid of meshes were increased at requiring void area for meeting the computational accuracy.4. Combining the specific example of Song-Shan CFRD, the typical section was selected for calculating the displacement and stress variety between void and no-void and arriving at the most dangerous void area on the typical section.5. Several different sections was selected and compared between void and no-void on concrete face for obtaining the most dangerous area of the whole concrete face. Then analyzing characteristic on all kinds of sections, we finally got a conclusion where the most dangerous area was.6. Making use of the above conclusion and changing the area on the most dangerous section, we could arrive at the maximum void area.
