Reservoir scheduling of water and sediment is one of the important methods of solving the problem of reservoir sedimentation. On the basis of summing up the problems of reservoir sedimentation, the present solutions and research status of it in the world, with Sanmenxia Reservoir as a platform, reservoir scheduling of water and sediment is studied in this paper. Main research contents and conclusions are as follows:1) Proceeding with the sediment movement and its source of Sanmenxia Reservoir, it is analyzed in this paper the hydrograph of water and sediment of the reservoir inflow flood, and the result indicates that the process of water and sediment is non synchronous, the main reason of which is the difference in movement principles and sources between water and sediment, with the sediment peak lagging behind the flood peak.2) According to the actual scheduling result and the sediment prediction model, the hydrograph of water and sediment of the dam-site flood is predicted. The result indicates that the non-synchrony of the water and sediment is aggravated, which results in the difficulty of scheduling of water and sediment.3) Based on the rule of reservoir scheduling, the different plans of the reservoir scheduling of water and sediment are made and compared. It proves that the sediment runoff may not be maximal just depending on the discharging openly for flood detention.4) In the terms of the advantage and disadvantage of the plans and the reservoir scheduling for beneficial use, a stage-discharge control model is developed to maximize the reservoir sediment runoff. In the end, capabilities of the model are demonstrated through the application to Sanmenxia Reservoir. The result shows that the calculating scheduling process is close to the actual one, and reflects the scheduling rule of Sanmenxia Reservoir reasonable.
