Hospitals in China are experiencing three major transformations, namely, medical mode, medical technology and economic system, which are bound to exert enormous impact on aspects of functional structure, route, space, and relevant values etc. At the preliminary stage of medical reform, large general hospitals in some major cities in China are now under renovation, extension or reconstruction elsewhere, while those in medium and small cities are expected to undergo necessary alterations in the coming decade. As an indispensable part of hospital buildings, the out-patient department leaves a first impression to people as the starting point of the whole medical treatment, thus imposing a distinct relevance to rehabilitation. The seemingly complex and changeable functions and space structure constantly baffle most architects engaging in hospital building (out-patient department) design, which actually are inherently related and follow some universal rules in a way all other natural complexities do. Designing rules for hospitals can be realized through a systemized design language. Starting with a development review of out-patient department in hospitals and a viewpoint of human behaviour, the thesis attempts to offer a stage-by-stage exploration of out-patient department building from a classified point of view; the mode language for its design with substantial field research examples, which are supposed to be of referential value for the design of out-patient department of hospital buildings, so as to avoid unnecessary repetitions.
