It is well known that ice or snow on the road surface has great influences, such as leading to accident, on transportation in North China. This would seriously affect national economy development and living safety. Now, the most common method where deicing salt is used could destroy the surface and establishment of the roadway and pollute the environment. Therefore, it is important to adopt the new method for deicing or melting snow. In this paper, the deicing and snow-melting system by using electric heating cable is studied. Based on a series of experiment studies and finite element analyses, the temperature distribution in layer of structure and ascending rule of temperature are measured and analyzed. The feasibility of this method for deicing and snow-melting is discussed. Furthermore, the system control procedure is designed and the economical and social benefits are discussed. The main research works are described as follows: (1) The experiment of deicing and snow-melting by electric heating cable has been done. Based on the input power of 250-400 W/㎡recommended by foreign data, the input power of 270 W/㎡is adopted in this experimental study. A test sample of 1 ㎡is made according to road construction demanded and electric heating cable is buried in this sample. Snow melting and deicing effects, temperature of surface and structure layer of road are measured. (2) Based on the theory of heating transfer, a mathematical model is designed and heating transfer differential equations and condition to induce the solution are built. The results by infinite element analysis software—ANSYS are compared with those of experiment. It can be find that the analysis results are consistent with the experiment result. Based on this conclusion, temperature distribution of structure layer and road surface, the ascending rule of temperature is researched by theory. (3) The factors that influence the input power of electric heating cable system are discussed. These factors include material physical properties, weather data, and scheme of input power. The instructional scheme of input power and the simple controlling measure is proposed.
