Tied arch bridge, as solving problem of foundation of mollisol, is competent in the modern bridge. Steel cable is high weight, corruptible and fatigable. But CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) cable is high strength, light weight, corrosion free and fatigue resistance. So using CFRP cable will be the essential approach to settle the fatigue and corrosion problems of steel cable.The material properties of CFRP is different from steel. So the nonlinear mechanic behaviors and the load-carrying capacity of the long span arch bridge with CFRP or steel hangers and tie bar have been studied. For discerning the characteristic or nature of structure bearing loads and ultimate load-carrying capacity of structure, a finite element computation procedure considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities for determining ultimate load-carrying capacity is developed in this paper. The paper gives main content and several results as follows:(1) Adopting the Updated Lagrangian formulation(U.L) and layered model of beam, the coupling nonlinear computation procedure named DNFEA about static analysis of plane member structure have been accomplished. The geometrical nonlinearities includes cable sag effect, beam-column effect and large displacement effect.(2) The static characteristic of CFRP cables is analyzed and a series of advantages of CFRP cables are found when comparing with steel cables.(3) When the arch bridge supports dead load, live load or temperature load, the arch bridge with different hangers and tie bars of CFRP and steel have been compared firstly. The deflection of the arch bridge with CFRP hangers and tie bars is greater than the arch bridge with steel hangers and tie bars. When drop in temperature, the mechanic behaviors of the arch bridge with CFRP hangers and tie bars is better. But when the temperature rise, the mechanic behaviors of the arch bridge with CFRP hangers and tie bars is bad.(4) The stiffness degradation of hangers has influence on the ultimate load-carrying capacity and tied arch bridge stability .(5) Combined with the Dongtiao River Bridge in Zhejiang province, the arch bridge with CFRP hangers and tie bars and the arch bridge with steel hangers and tie bars are analyzed.
