Lhasa, which located in the west of the Lhasa River Valley, is an ancient city with a history of more than 1300 years. The city was come into being along with the construction of the Jokhang Monastery, during the long years of formation and development, the city and architecture have always under the influence of Tibetan Buddhism, reflecting a certain religious and cultural meaning. Up to now, the old city area in Lhasa still maintains the style and features of Ming and Qing dynasty. By means of investigating the city space and the remained old buildings in the old city area, revealing the relationship between immaterial factors (such as religious culture, etc) and city formation, space and architecture. This plays a positive roll in comprehening and grasping the historical and cultural value especially in the renewal plan of ancient city and protection of historical appearance of the old city area.This text is composed of a preface and five chapters. The preface explains the purpose and meaning of the topic and the structure of the thesis; chapter 1 discusses the formation and development process of Lhasa; the second chapter introduced the influence of Tibetan Buddhism and its doctrine on the city construction and the building layout in Lhasa; The fourth chapter analyses the types and characteristics of the traditional residential buildings in the old city area of Lhasa and discusses the relationship between Tibetan culture and traditional residential building; then chapter 5 brings forward some protection and renewal plan aiming at the problems that the old city area is facing, which is on the conclusion elicits on the basis of the above-mentioned research and analysis.
