Because harmonic gear drive have many merits such as big ratio of transmission, small capacity and weight, high drive accuracy, little return difference and so on, it has applied successfully to many fields including aerospace, atomic reactor and high-energy accelerator, radar system, robot, military field, optical instrument and general machine. Though almost all fields involved harmonic gear drive has been studied by many domestic and foreign scholars, large numbers of work still are required to do. So, it is very significant to study harmonic gear drive. The problem of study on fatigue strength of flexible wheel which mainly influence life of harmonic drive is one of the most important research of harmonic gear drive. According to achievements and shortages that have achieved on study of harmonic drive at the present time, by applying elastic theory, nonlinear FEM and the techniques of CAD/CAE, a 3-D model of flexible wheel is established. The model is analyzed by finite element contact method in order to gain stress and displacement of flexible wheel. Comparison of stress with displacement of flexible wheel is done when different wave producers work. The main achievements and characteristics of this paper are as follows:(1) The principles, features and trend in development of harmonic gear drive are analyzed and discussed. This new method of finite element contact analysis of flexible wheel is first put forward based on study on it at present.(2) The mathematic model of flexible wheel is established based on ring and shell theory when different wave producers work. Based on this theory, thedeformation and loading distribution of flexible wheel are discussed. The general methods that theoretical design flexible wheel and check its strength is put forward.(3) Parameterization modeling of flexible wheel is realized based on the mathematic model and the techniques of the advanced development of ANSYS software.(4) According to actual working state, study on flexible wheel is regarded as nonlinear question. Contact analysis of it is done by finite element method by using ANSYA software. Its stress and displacement distribution are gained.(5) The method that fatigue failure of flexible wheel is solved by setting structure of wave producer is put forward. Flexible wheel is analyzed by finite element contact method in the condition of different wave producer.(6) Results gained in the condition of different wave producer is compared and analyzed. A conclusion is gained that axial wave producer improves stress distribution of flexible wheel, holds the merit of harmonic gear drive and increases life of it.
