Water environmental protection development of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area relates to the long term stable safety of Three Gorges Project and the sustainable development of Yangtze River valley. Three Gorges Reservoir Area's water quality, which is the barometer of how the place works, is the key to deciding whether the administration and engineering of the reservoir. It also has a great effect on the overall management and development of Yangtze river, Not only does Three Gorges Reservoir Area provide water for tens of millions of people living there, but also affects the safty of drinking water on the downstream section of Yangtze River. By carrying out an study on the level of he typical POPs materials in the drinking water, that is, to analyze POPs'speciecs and concentration level in raw water and effluent of Three Gorges Reservoir Area's water purification plants, we can get the first hand data, which provid the safety guarantees to water resources protection and provide technique support for the government policy. I analyzed HCH and DDT in water sample with liquid-liquid extract+ GC-ECD approach. Also, I analyzed PAHs and PAEs. In July, 2004 and February, 2005, I analyzed the raw water samples of six water purification plants in Three Gorges Reservoir Area. Then in March, 2005 I do the first step research on PAHs removal capacity of conventional water treatment techniques by monitored POPs'removal rate in two sets of typical water treatment units'water sample. After having tested and analyzed raw water samples of 6 water purification plants in Three Gorges Reservoir Area, I have found HCH and DDT only in water sample during low flow periods of A and F water purification plant. The samples'concentration level is ng/L, meanwhile, which doesn't go beyond the national standard "Environmental quantity standards for surface water-GB 3838—2002"and "Drinking water quality criteria standard GB5746-85". The study shows that the water purification palnts in The Three Gorges Reservoir Area especially those raw water from Yangtze River and Jialingjia River is safe enough for drinking and its level is low. After having tested and analyzed the raw water samples of 6 water purification plants in Three Gorges Reservoir Area, I have found several variety of PAHs and PAEs. Of which, naphthalene, fluoranthene and DEHP are priority pollutants firstly listed by SEPA.. "USA drinking water quality criteria standard"stipulate the density of DEHP is 6 μg/ L; but now DEHP is found in each water purification plant and each concentration level is tens to hundreds ng/L. Owing to its latent bane, enough attention should be paid to it. Besides DIBP concentration level is high. So we should be concerned about the trend of its. Generally speaking the water pollutions in the 6 water factories in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area is not very serious and the water is apt to be safe for drinking. But we should pay more attention to its contaminative trend. Having taken samples from each step of two sets of typical water treatment units'water samples, I examined and analyzed them and then found the two normal units have some effect on PAHs removal capacity ; however the effect on wiping out PAEs is poor. In NO 1 unit, 187% of naphthalene, 71% of anthracene and 76% of fluoranthene can be filtered. In NO 2 unit, 96% of naphthalene, 42% of anthracene and 38% of fluoranthene can be filtered. Filtered water is polluted again after disinfection and pumping, which leads to the increasing of density of POPs.
