Gear transmission with belt as meshing medium is a new gear transmission, which is economic and environment friendly. Initial study has been done, such as design and machining of gear set, selection of meshing medium, calculation for the transmission and so on. On the purpose of further optimum selection of meshing medium, prolonging meshing medium's life and offering theoretical and experimental fundament for water lubrication on this new transmission, beginning with experimental study on various belts, analysis and comparison among every selected belts based on test data have been done in the dissertation. What's more, a simplified model has been designed and prototype has been made to study frication and lubrication between gear face and belts. And then, according to test facts and data, frictional wear principle of gear transmission with belt as meshing medium has been studied, and lubrication model for the transmission has been built and its preliminary lubricating theory also has been analyzed. Test data from performance test of various belts on experiment table shows that glass-fiber twister belt has nice performance. It's much better than any other belts selected at present, no matter on bearing capacity, service life or transmission efficiency. The most surprising fact is transmission efficiency of gear set with this belt is over 96%, which is equivalent to that of enclosed drive. Test on prototype indicates contact zone between gear face and belt is much bigger than that between two gears'face. And frictional wear of belt without lubrication is more serious than that with lubrication. More over, water also can be used as lubricant due to the belt. On the base of tests, it's found that there are several relative slipping between belt and gear face through analysis and deducing, such as relative slipping between tooth crest of wheel and inner side of belt, tooth top of gear and outer side of belt as engaging in, gear face and belt at meshing point. Results show that relative slipping between gear set and belt are very serious, which cause wear of belt. Hydrodynamics, elastohydrodynamics and squeezing film lubrication analysis on lubrication model of gear transmission with belt as meshing medium indicate the belt make lubricant film easy to come into being even water used as lubricant.
