The building technique of the modern concrete-faced sand-gravel-fill dam is the significant achievement in the field of modern dam construction. With increasingly quantity of the concrete-faced sand-gravel-fill dams being construction or drown up to construction in our country in the last few years, some new design method and advanced construction technique have been developed.Applying the finite element & numerical method, combining the actual circumstance of the Heiquan Reservoir Dam, separately providing vertical draining work and non-draining work are analyzed. The paper circulated the location of the saturating line and the quantity of the seepage according to the two situations. The general conditions of the construction are also circulated to the different points. The paper specially analyzed the influence of the seepage to the dam body when many cracks appear on the concrete-faced and the water current from the upstream seeps into the dam body. Otherwise, the harmfulness of the seepage to the dam is analyzed under situation of the water-stop invalid between the bottom deck of the waveproof and the horizontal joint of the concrete-faced.Using geo-sploe numerical simulation analysis, modeling, solving, loading, the seepage of the actual construction is modeled, the results of the two dimensional nonlinear finite element circulation of the two type of the projects indicates that the horizontal draining has not evident advantage to lower the height of saturating line in the course of design of concrete-faced sand-gravel-fill dam, because of the different seeping ability of the dam between horizontal and vertical direction, but the result of using vertical draining work is much better than horizontal one. Setting vertical draining work is of great benefit to the concrete-facedsand-gravel-fill dams; The water-stop between the bottom deck of the wave-proof and the horizontal joint of the concrete-faced of the concrete-faced sand-gravel-fill dam is the key part in building the dam. Once the water-stop is invalid, the height of the saturating line is higher whether the vertical draining work is set or not. So this will be very unbeneficial to the dam body.The result of the circulation and analysis of this paper indicates that the method of providing vertical draining work adopted by Heiquan Reservoir is very reasonable and effective to lowering the height of the saturating line. The accomplishment of the circulation in this paper has the important reference and guide for the design and construction of the concrete-faced sand-gravel-fill dams.
