The purpose of this paper is to solve the difficulty of filtering random noise, impulse noise in power quality disturbance detection as well as the complexity and time-consuming using the conventional methods to check the singularity of disturbance signal and classify its type. A novel approach on power quality disturbance detection is presented in this paper. At first the filter based on mathematical morphology is applied to dispose the disturbance signal in advance. A multiple structuring element complex filter is created to restrain many kinds of noise. Then using the filtered results, the grid varying regularity of the signal is used to locate the start and end time of disturbance quickly and accurately. At last, the extracted features of the signal are used to classify the disturbance by the nearest neighbor classifier quickly. The result of Matlab simulation confirms the effectivity of the filter-location-classification method. Numerical results show that the proposed method has good performance in speed, calculating amount and accuracy. It can be easily applied in projects.
