With the development of multi-functional architecture, tall building structures with lateral stiffness varying in vertical direction are widely used in seismic zones. It is shown from seismic investigation reports in several decades that this kind of structures do not function very well in the earthquake. Although some criteria have been provided in national codes to control the lateral stiffness ratio between contiguous story for this kind of structures, there are still some imperfect issues to be studied further. In this paper, several spatial structural models including frame structure, shear wall structure, frame-shear structure with transfer story, tube structure with transfer story have been set up and analyzed. Through changing the story height, the sizes of structural members and the position of the transfer story, some roles of the variation of lateral stiffness as well as the lateral displacement, the story drift, shear force, overturning moment and the aseismic capability of the analysis models are studied thoroughly. Several salutary proposals and recommendations related to the control of the lateral stiffness of building structures are put forward finally.
