The thesis makes a study on the improvement of pedestrian spaces environment in center district of Kunming City from the angle of urban design. In recent years, though Kunming City is urbanized in a fast speed, the protection and construction of the humanistic pedestrian spaces stay as before, resulting in the deterioration of the pedestrian space that is closely related to citizens' daily life and a negative influence on the city landscape and cultural activities related. Therefore, we are now faced with the problem of how to improve the quality of the pedestrian spaces in the construction and development of Kunming City. As there are only a few researches on the quality of pedestrian mall in Kunming, the paper makes the study from the micro-view of finding and solving the problem while at the same time have a deep exploration of the overall background, trying to make the research systematic and integral. My thesis is composed of three parts and five chapters. The first part is the introduction and the analysis of the background, compounding chapter one and chapter two. This part firstly talks about the background, the concept and the significance of the improvement of the pedestrian spaces, thus explains the reasons to choose this topic. On the basis of that, thesecond chapter focuses on the background--Kunming City (including itshistory and culture, geography and climate, the nature of the city and the location for its development), on the main body--the pedestrians (including the features and types of the pedestrian), and on thesubstance--the pedestrian spaces itself (including the analysis of thelayout of and the classification of pedestrian mall). The second part, or the third chapter of this paper, sums up and classifies the problems about the pedestrian spaces in center district of Kunming based on my field study and questionnaire survey. Then I discuss the causes of those problems that include the impact of vehicles, the ill-planned construction, bad management and so on. This chapter finally reasons about the feasibilityof the improvement of the pedestrian spaces from another perspective, providing evidences on the culture of the city, the climate, the space layout, the economic conditions, etc., with the emphasis on the relationship between economic elements and the improvement of the pedestrian spaces. The third part is composed of the last two chapters, chapter four and chapter five, the part that tries to provide a solution. Based on the study of the development and evolution of the pedestrian spaces home and abroad with particular cases, chapter four sums up the features of the evolution and put forward the beliefs and principles to be observed in the improvement of pedestrian spaces. The fifth chapter raises the constructive proposal of improvement before the design and planning of pedestrian spaces with the belief of step-by-step development. The proposal tries to combine the theory with the practice and emphasizes the learning from certain examples of good usage of the walking space in Kunming, trying to make a proposal directed to the particular problems. The final part of the thesis expounds the management associated with the improvement of pedestrian spaces.
