Since the city of Chongqing has become a municipality directly under the Central Government in 1997, the advancement of its political status, as a juncture for a prosperous future, provides a wider space for the further development of its economics. The problem restricting the development of regional economics in its integrity at present, however, is the shortage of central cities in subsidiary regions due to the unsuitable distribution of cities and towns, which obstructs the effective spurring of the city proper on its surrounding areas. Therefore, it is urgent to foster and develop regional central cities during the process of the systematic construction of cities and towns in Chongqing. That is what this thesis focuses on. In the introductory part, the reasons for choosing the topic of this thesis, the discussions of many important definitions and the importance and essentiality of researching the issue of development of regional central cities are presented. The body of this thesis is divided into three parts: The first part is Chapter Two that puts forward the problem. It analyzes the history and the present features in Yongchuan. On the basis of that analysis, it comes to a conclusion that the main task at present is developing the regional central cities to meet the needs of development of regional economics in Chongqing. The second part, including Chapter Three and Chapter Four, analyzes and concludes the theories and experience of development of regional central cities theoretically and practically. On the aspect of theory, it analyzes the definition of regional central city, the interaction between urbanization and the development of regional central cities, and the evolution of regional central cities, making a theoretical preparation for further research. On the aspect of practice, it sums up the main styles and successful experience of the construction of regional central cities in many developed regions from home and abroad, which could be used for reference in the development of regional central cities. The third part is Chapter Five. Here, the resolutions for the present problems, together with the strategies for forging Yongchuan into a subsidiary regional central city of Chongqing are explored. The last part of this thesis serves as a brief conclusion.
