Joints are important in steel structures. The overall failure of many steel structures is caused by the failure of joints. The research of joints of steel structures has been very hot in the world. The special shaped joint which links the steel pipe column and H steel beam is a new stiff joint used in multistory and high-raise steel buildings and special steel structures. This joint is welded which structure is very complex and transmits the moment and shear of beams in two directions. Its stiffness is great to meeting the requirement the need of strength. It is affected by extra stress caused by weld. So there are stress collection, asymmetric distribution of stress and decrease of ductility in the region of joint. Whereas, the design of the joint is based on the assumption of uniform stress distribution along the flange in project. And, on the basis of the analyses of earthquake disaster in U.S.A and Japan, it can be found that the failures of many steel buildings are caused by the brittle failures of joints of steel structures which result from the region of stress collection. Although the steel structures have been regarded as having good ductility and seismic behavior, the brittle failures of steel buildings in these earthquakes force researchers to recognize their seismic behavior again. Therefore, the research of the performance of this special steel beam-column joint such as force and seismic behavior is important. The finite element analysis of this joint has been completed by the huge program of ANSYS in this paper. The following researches have been done. â‘ The actual stress distribution of this joint under design loading which is designed according to the traditional design methods in projects is researched. The accuracy of the traditional design methods has been appraised. â‘¡The force and seismic behavior of joints under symmetric and asymmetric loading has been researched, including the stress collection, stress distribution, three-dimensional stress zone and fail feature of them. The seismic behavior of joint has been appraised. â‘¢The force behavior of joints without lateral slab has been researched and the seismic behavior of them has been appraised. The influence of lateral slab on the force and seismic behavior of joint has been researched through the comparison of the analysis results of former joint. â‘£The stress collection and seismic behavior of joints with various radius has been researched. The influence of change of radius on stress collection and seismic behavior of joints has been found. The equation of the relation between linear displacement ductility factors, plastic development factors, ductility development factors and radius has been established by simulating formulas. The above work will provide references for the seismic design of this joint.
