Fast speed, more security, less the pollution of the environment and comfort are the aims of the vehicle in the future. Auxiliary brakes will be indispensably equipped on the vehicle. Having more advantages than other auxiliary brakes, the eddy current brake will be wildly equipped on vehicles. At present, the manufacture of the eddy current retarder in China has just begun. The differences of technology and quality are significant compared with abroad. So the research on theory and brake ability of eddy current retarder is significant.This paper introduced the current status of main brake and the necessity of eddy current retarder, then introduced some characteristics of eddy current retarder such as structure, working principle, install types, traits and develop trend. A mathematical model of the braking torque was built, some key parameters was designed, a rule to match the eddy current retarder to vehicles was chose. The paper researched the braking ability from four aspects (braking deceleration, braking distance, ability of declivity, brake stability) and deduced formulas of the four aspects. According to the distributed-lumped model technology, the influences on the torsional oscillation of driveline on vehicle by eddy current retarder were modeled with Simulink. Analyzing the modeling results, the degree of influence was confirmed.The main results of research in paper have been applied to the design of the eddy current retarder, proved to be practical and correct in practice.
