This paper researches the structural system and its member performance of multi-storey residential structure system based on cold-formed steel. And this system is proposed based on the area of Wuhan with low earthquake fortification intensity and its great advantage of steel production and steel member manufacture. It is believed that the research of this paper is helpful to promote the development of domestic steel structural residences. Steel materials are obviously hardened after the cold-formed process. And as kind of most economical formed material, cold-formed steel members are used in practical engineering more and more widely. Because the present Technical Code of Cold-Formed Thin-Walled Steel Structures only adapt to the cold-formed steel with wall thickness of no more than 6mm, the study of the cold-formed effects of the cold-formed steel, of which wall thickness is larger than 6mm, is practically meaningful to promote the use of cold-formed steel in building. This paper does the research from two main aspects: the structural members performance and the structural system of multi-storey residence based on cold-formed steel. And the followings are the research of this paper:Firstly, the load carrying capacity of the cold-formed square (or rectangular) steel tubes with wall thickness larger than 6mm is stimulated by ANSYS, in which the influence of initial geometrical imperfection, residual stresses and cold-formed effect etc. on the ultimate strength is analyzed. This provides basis for gaining the strength design formula in Technical Code of Cold-Formed Thin-Walled Steel Structures.Secondly, the residential system based on cold-formed multi-storey steel structure is suggested. The adaptation of this system in the low earthquake fortification intensity area of Wuhan is discussed from the aspects of construction and structure. In addition, the economy and feasibility of this system are demonstrated by analyzing examples. The results give direction to the applicationand study of cold-formed multi-storey steel structural residences.
