Modern electrical railway plays the most important part in the transportation, which demands higher reliability and security. As a very important part, dependable operation of the traction substation provides powerful guarantees for the railroad transportation. Therefore, it's theoretically sound and practically feasible to develop an expert system for traction substation fault analysis serving as an aid for operator to understand the information conveyed by fault waveform, diagnose faulted electrical equipments and assess the behavior of protective relays and circuit breakers. On the basis of having a good knowledge of works by previously done by others in this field, also by the theories of Expert System,CBR and RBR, an Expert System of Traction substation for fault analysis is constructed based on Visual Prolog, according to the requirements of electrical railway. The expert system kernel adopts the typical form of Production Expert System: inference engine as the central part, electrical equipment database, fault information database, current jump event identification rule base, protective relaying scheme rule base and relay-CB configuration rule base as the basis part, explanation module and human-machine interface module as the assistant part. The equipments in electrical equipment database are described by means of objects, where the rules described by means of Production Rules. The procedural inference engine and the fault data driven forward reasoning are employed.CBR is introduced in the inference process. The special events are artificially added to the case database. So it improves the self-learning functionand maintenance. Therefore, CBR and RBR has the characteristics of high efficiency and stability with contrast to the pure RBR.Finally, the building of traction substation-related knowledge, including electrical equipment data, protective relaying scheme rule and relay-CB configuration rule, is demonstrated in a case study. Subsequently, the program has finished the function of diagnosing faulted electrical equipments and assessing the behavior of protective relays and circuit breakers based on Visual Prolog.
