The investment of Western area is the key point of economy construction of the 21st century in China. With the continuous and steady increment of Chinese economy and proceedings of Western Development, national key project, such as Tibetan railway, begins to be constructed one by one, and increment of mileage of road and rapid development of tourism and municipal definitely enforces the transportation to be increased quickly, requires quantity of large and medium duty vehicles and its engine with the characteristic of adaptation of plateau, high and cold and sandstorm condition. But for quite a long time, because of historical objective reason, little attentions are paid to the research and development of plateau type engine, with little investment and technology, which leads domestic plateau type engine to be lagged, not adapt to the Western Development severely. With the practice of Western Policy, the huge market offers the corporation and manufacturer hope and opportunity and they throw themselves to the market, also the diesel manufacturers are offered the chance to participate in the market. As the primary production, the heavy-duty vehicle offers the diesel factory a huge market opportunity. The characteristic of plateau environment and its effect on the performance of diesel engine is analyzed primarily, then the matching principle of diesel engine and turbocharger is analyzed, calculated and checked. The main work of the thesis is as following: 1. The effect of plateau ambient pressure, temperature and boiling point of water on diesel engine is analyzed. 2. Matching calculation between diesel engine and turbocharger is made. The turbocharge diesel engine is divided into several sub-thermal system, such as diesel engine, intake pipe, exhausted pipe, compressor, turbine and inter-cooler, the characteristics of compressor and turbine are processed for input. The performance parameter of compressor base on Mach's factor will change while operating in the plateau area, so the performance parameter is transferred. 3. The plateau ability of two type Yu-Chai diesel engine is estimated according to the effect factor of plateau environment on the performance of diesel engine and matching calculation program mentioned above. The type of engine is chosen and its structure is optimized with the estimation results. 4. The checking result of diesel engine operating in different height above sea level is compared, after the plateau adaptation improvement of diesel engine, the requirement of dynamic, fuel economy and thermal balance of diesel engine in different height above sea level can be met. 5. The practical technology of plateau diesel engine is investigated, the improvement of every system is discussed, the design of turbocharger, water tank of cooling system and cooling fans and the coolant, the starter for cold start, the improvement of air-filter system and the material improvement are presented according to the characteristic of plateau environment and the operating condition of diesel engine in plateau area in order to meet the operating requirement in plateau area. After the above research, the main conclusions are drawn: 1. In order to make the diesel engine adapt to the plateau environment, every system of diesel engine have to be improved with compatibility. 2. After analysis of every system of diesel engine, the plateau performance of diesel engine is estimated that can shorten the period of development and save cost. 3. Although the plateau environment affects the diesel engine performance a lot, the practical requirement can be met after the improvement of every system of diesel engine. In order to meet the requirement of West, the production of Yu-Chai diesel engine corporation covers the power range of 154kW-210kW, supply to vehicle corporation such as Chuan-Qi,Shan-Qi, Liu-Qi and Dongfeng so on. Furthermore, the 220kW-309kW diesel engine of Daewoo is brought in to meet the West's requirement. For the work above, brings out the direction of research of improvement in the future.
