Pump sump is a transition segment which connects a forebay and the pump intake, the aim of which supplies a better flow pattern for the pump so as to meet the conditions of the hydraulic design of the pump intake. Usually model-experiment method is employed to improve the flow pattern. In recent years, with the development of numerical calculation technology and computer image technology, its research means are more and more diversified.In this paper the open sump flow with vertical intake is simulated with calculation fluid dynamics method according to model-test reports of Lianhu pump station. The mathematical model and its boundary conditions are established. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation have been solved with two-layer k-ε model using SIMPLIC algorithm .The flow control equation is dispersed with the finite volume method. The results prescribe the location and strength of the free-surface and wall-attached vortices, which is in agreement with the experiment data. Then the mathematical model is applied in the sump flow field simulation of multi-working state of large pump station and its improved measure. Solutions demonstrate the numerical model may be employed to study the intake flow structure and vortices in pump sumps.
