Relay protection based on microprocessor will develop quickly with the progress of computer, communication and other correlative technology. It is necessary and useful to research and develop a new generator protection system based on microprocessor, by using new technologies of related fields. Generators are essential and important elements of power system, and the reliability of generator's running directly determines whether the power system works safely or not. The sudden removal of generator-unit will cause great disturbance. So we should pay more attention to the relay of generator-unit. Firstly, the current development of small-sized hydroelectric plants of China is summarized and the developing direction and new improvement of relay protection device based on microprocessor is discussed. Then a whole generator protective scheme is put forward based on the practical running needs. At the same time the hardware is designed and selected according to the requests of protection system. Furthermore the function settings of protection and the structure of the hardware are introduced. With comparison to the software design of conventional protection device, module design of the system's software has more flexibility. With the idea of module design, the software system is innovatively designed, including the program's whole structure and all the modules. It is an important trend of relay protection to enhance the function of communication. In this paper, the feature of communication in protection based on microprocessor is analyzed and a new communication protocol is presented. The protocol has several virtues such as reasonable framework, high reliability and excellent expansibility. The realization of communication module based on protocol is also described. The device has passed the functionality test. The result shows that its performance meets the requests designed, and this device has accurate measurement, fast response, and the perfect features.
