With the development of smart grid, the level of integrated substation automation's requirement rises accordingly. The microprocessor protection and monitoring device is an essential part in the substation automation system. Embedded real-time operating system is real-time and reliable, it is widely used on the microprocessor protection and monitoring device in recent years. In this paper, the major work is developing a microprocessor protection and monitoring device based on STM32 and embedded real-time operating system ?C/OS-II which can realize many kinds of function in the substation automation system. On the basis of extensive literature review, the paper presents the analysis of the function and requirement of microprocessor protection and monitoring device, and provides STM32-based development with embedded real-time operation system ?C/OS-II. In the hardware scheme, chose the 32-bit microcontroller STM32F205ZET6 as CPU, and completed all of the hardware circuit design which can provide 12 analog sample channels, 32 switch inputs, 16 switch outputs and multi-interfaces such as Ethernet, RS232, RS485, etc. In the software scheme, transplanted the ?C/OS-II based on STM32 and finished the development of multi-task application program. On the basis of its protective function, this device provides fault record and supports communication protocol such as Modbus and 103, and is able to extend the function based on the site requirement. The design of microprocessor protection and monitoring device has the advantages of low cost and low volume. It is safe and reliable which allows real-time detection and further extension. By completing the tests and site trials, it meets the engineering and technological requirements in the substation automation system.
