The southwestern area where is resourceful in hydroelectric power, has gradually constituted the electric power system industry which mainly consists of small and medium-sized hydropower generators. Generator takes the most essential part of the electric power system, because the working state of generator affects the security, stability and reliability of the electric power system directly. Therefore, developing a set of digital relay protection device for the small and medium-sized capacity generator is significant for the construction of the digital substation.A set of digital generator protection device based on Modbus communication protocol is designed in this thesis from the point of view of practical applications. The microprocessor ATmega64 was used as the core in this device, and the device could be used for real-time AC sampling and data processing with MAX125. So the peripheral devices was decreased, the reliability of the device enhanced, and the cost price reduced. The hardware composition of the device and the software design method was expounded in this thesis, and the traditional generator protection algorithm was improved to make it adapted to microcomputer-based relay protection. In order to adapt the digital substation automation system better, this design improved the communication functions of the device and designed a communication module based on Modbus communication protocol. According to the characteristic of Modbus protocol and the application on electric power system, this thesis discussed the functional code choice and the application on microcomputer-based relay protection.
