Biodegradation is the most important feature of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) and has a great impact on the engineering characteristics of municipal solid waste. So it used to be mainly considered in the condition as settlement calculation and stability control of MSW. But studies on this aspect were scarce. What have done on it most based on field tests, so the results have many limits and have difficult in practice. The rule of biodegradation and the influence of biodegradation on engineering characteristic of MSW and the quantification of biodegradation's effect on the settlement of MSW et al, were not explained feasibly. The foundational studies need to be improved.Based on the former analysis and considering the advantage of laboratory tests as lone influence aspect and easy control condition, a series of lab tests were done to study the rule of biodegradation and the foundational engineering characteristics of MSW. A lot of meaningful conclusions were made. The main work of the thesis is as follows:â‘  A lot of tests on biodegradation were carried out . Reduction of the weight of organic substance were used to reflect the extent of biodegradation, and the rule of its change along with time were studied under different conditions. Considering the mechanism of biodegradation, a feasible model were suggested to quantify the biodegradation.â‘¡ The influence of four aspects as water ratio and temperature et al on biodegradation were studied. The rule of the production of water and gas because of biodegradation were concluded.â‘¢ A lot of foundational soil tests were carried out to study the influence of biodegradation on the engineering characteristics of MSW. The operation of lab tests about MSW were talked about.â‘£ A series of compression tests were carried under different conditions to study the compression characteristics of MSW under different component or differentbiodegradation conditions.(5) The effect of biodegradation on the compression of MSW were quantified based on the biodegradation tests and compression tests. A feasible and comprehensive model for compression of MSW were deduced. The effect of load and biodegradation were considered sufficiently. The model were validated well from settlement tests.
