Dredge pump or slurry pump is an application of solid liquid two-phase flow centrifugal pumps and the key equipment of hydraulic dredgers, mainly used in the infrastructure projects such as dredging in rivers and lakes, construction of ports and waterways and so on. The impeller is the key component of a dredge pump. The quality of designing the impeller will directly affect the performance of slurry pump, the efficiency of dredging and the service life of impeller. The design process of impeller is very complex and need a big amount of work. In recent years, although china's dredging industry has achieved vigorous development, the key equipment such as slurry pumps of large and medium sized hydraulic dredgers are mainly imported from abroad. So it is necessary to study the slurry pump. There are considerable differences in the characteristics of the soil, which includes silt, clay, sand, gravel, even the massive coral reef, cobble and so on. Based on the theory on the design of the solid liquid two-phase flow centrifugal pumps and considering the characteristics of the soil under water and the operation characteristics of the dredge pump, the design method of the dredge pump impeller is presented, the corresponding Visual Basic program is developed and the solid model of impeller is also created by using Pro/E. The parameterized design of the slurry pump is realized. Another task in this paper is that we also study the effects of sand on the performance of a slurry pump by experiment and performance prediction models. The work of this paper will help technicians in dredging industry enhance the understanding of slurry pump, reasonably design and use the slurry pump in practice.
