This paper focuses on the basic principle, transmission ratio formula, construction design, kinematics analysis, meshing theory analysis, digital simulation and NC manufacturing of mail elements for nutation drive. The double circular-arc as the basic tooth profile of helical bevel gears for nutation drive is proposed. Based on nutation principles, transmission ratio formula and the kinematics properties analysis of whole reducer for nutation drive have been obtained. The tooth profile and the design of the gear alignment curve for tooth have been proposed. The mathematical modeling of meshing equations and tooth surface equations of internal and external helical bevel gears are developed. The principles and methods for accuracy modeling of the internal and external helical bevel gears are proposed. On the basis of the whole construction of the reducer, the 3D modeling and virtual assembly for nutation drive have been completed in Solidworks system. In Solidworks/DDM system, the kinematical and dynamical simulations of the virtual prototype of nutation drive are implemented. By kinematical simulation, the accuracy of the nutation movement is verified. By dynamical simulation, the load capacity and movement characteristics of the main elements of nutation drive are obtained. Based on the dynamical and kinematical simulation, the stresses, strains and displacements of the nutation drive for the internal and external helical bevel gears are accomplished by FEA method. The NC machining simulations of the internal and external helical bevel gears are implemented which provides approaches for the physical prototype machining and for the designing of machining cutters. The NC machining principles of helical bevel gears are proposed. The machining of one pair of internal and external helical bevel gears is completed.
