The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a phenomenon that atoms or atomic nucleus whose magnetic moment is not zero absorb electromagnetism radiant energy under permanent steady magnetic field. It is already 60 years since NMR was found. The NMR has obtained rapid development in both research content and application range over more than half century. With the wide application of this technology, more and more technicians have been engaged in relevant works. To tell the principle of NMR more visually and more clearly in teaching and training, it is needed to develop NMR instrument for teaching.The history and the principle of NMR technology are described in this paper. According to the qualification of NMR, the NMR instrument applying to teaching was developed. The development process includes three parts: magnetic circuit, circuit and coordinated software. The permanent magnet structure is employed in magnetic circuit design to guarantee the magnetic field is influenced little by temperature. Marginal oscillator is applied in electric circuit design to improve sensitivity and simplify the instrument structure; meanwhile the power circuit and monitoring circuit are also designed. Data acquisition card is used to acquire data. The programs about graphical display and atomic nucleus parameter calculating have been written. The instrument has many advantages: smaller, lower cost and maintaining expenses, easy operation, better effect in demonstration, and so on. The experimental results indicate that the instrument is very applicable for teaching and professional training.
