With the development of the technology on the mitigation of seismic disaster, more and more energy dissipation systems have been applied in the retrofit of buildings. A lot of researches and applications in practical structures with viscous dampers have been made abroad. And one of the fields of the research is the optimization of the dampers.There are two aspects in the dampers' optimization: the parameters optimization of the dampers and the position optimization of the dampers. The latter is mainly analyzed in this paper which covers the following contents:1, Several kinds of conformation and the mechanic models of viscous dampers are introduced. The analysis method and design approach of structures with viscous dampers are studied, in which the Fast Nonlinear Analysis methods is expounded specially.2, It has been proved in this paper that reducing the exponent of velocity of the piston can increase the magnitude of the dissipative energy, and damping ratio is a very important factor in the design of the structure with dampers.3, Position optimization of the viscous dampers is quite important in seismic analysis and seismic design. According to the theory of the viscous dampers' position optimization, a service building which used viscous damper to seismic retrofit is analysed carefully in this paper. Based on the results of calculations, it is concluded that with the position optimization of the dampers, the damping effectiveness is raised and the dampers used in the seismic retrofit is available.4, Some useful suggestions are proposed on the basis of the analysis of the project, and some problems which need further study are also bring forward at the end of this paper.
