The technical level of super long span bridge construction in China is approaching world advanced level with sustained improvement in recent years. However, the construction of super long span suspension bridge, particularly the main cable installation hualing system of superstructure is still unsatisfactory. Based on several years' experience on the construction of Runyang suspension bridge, the author made profound research on the hauling system for main cable erection. The critical problems of the system were analysed.Firstly, according to the author's description, the style of hualing system of Runyang suspension bridge was determined based on analysis of advantages and disadvantages of all types of hauling system, classified by either the way the hauling rope moves or the way the hauling rope is supporte, as well as comparision of hauling systems of a few completed suspension, particularly Humen Bridge in Guangdong province,Jiangyin Yangtze River Highway Bridge, Haicang Bridge in Xiamen of China and Akashi Strait Bridge in Japan.Subsequently, the article analyses the relationship between catwalk system and hauling system of Runyang suspension bridge and finalizes a few parameters that mutually constrains. Study of major equipments and tools were carried out during construction of the hualing system. As a result,the strand reeling and unreeling systems, hualing winch, strand carrier, strand clamper, guide wheels and supporting rolls etc. were develeped. By the aid of the manufacturer, JKB25 pulling winch was also developed.Efficiency generates only when research findings are converted into productive forces. The article organizes the consctuction plan of hualing system erection period, catwalk system erection and main cable strand erection in detail in accordance with design plan and research findings, and lists a number of achievements during construction.The paper attempts to provide reference for similar works under construction or to be built by presentation of the research process and results of hauling system of Runyang suspension bridge.
