Beginning with the courtyard, which is the most important archetypal space of human beings to construct and organize their buildings, the thesis argues about the origin, development and cultural factors behind the form of traditional courtyard space in the eastern and western world. The author compare the difference between eastern courtyard and western courtyard, at the same time, deeply analyzing the forms, principles, space futures and culture of Chinese traditional courtyard, then we come to the conclusion that the Chinese traditional courtyard space has some modern futures.After that, the author compares the Chinese traditional courtyard to modern architecture, and discovers the relations between them in the space form, using lots of architectural examples, to prove that the courtyard in modern architectures is related to the Chinese traditional courtyard.The analysis of relationship is not only stopping on the form, but also expecting to argue about the deeper level behind the form, namely the level of architectural culture. Based on relationship between the culture and sociology, the author intends to analyze and clarify the relations between them go step further.
