With the continuous advance of urban construction process and the rapid development of social economy, the contradiction is increasingly prominent between the requirement on scientific and effective management of underground pipelines and present behindhand management measures. According to the actuality and feature of underground pipelines related industries, the introduction of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will solve the problem radically. Urban underground pipelines GIS is based on the software and hardware platform of computer, which incorporated graphical description with literal information so that the integrated system of common searches and correlative inquiry of spatial geographic data and corresponding attribute data is realized. With the GIS of Dalian Maritime University underground pipelines being as engineering background, and with the emphasis on collecting pipelines data as basic, the following tasks have been performed in this paper: data processing, database designing, and establishing of underground integrated pipelines database of the University. During the process of constructing the database, aiming at practical demand analysis of campus pipelines, and referring to the existing national standards and industry standards, classification and coding of database is deeply investigated, database classification standard and coding method is also established. Besides, common features of GIS development related with underground pipelines is summed up, and an universal model of urban underground pipelines GIS is put forward. In terms of thoughtway of GIS software engineering, and incorporated with the particularity of the University pipelines, scientific and systematic analysis and design is carried out, and underground pipelines GIS system with stability, standardization, practicability and maintainability is established with MapInfo being as GIS developing platform, MapBasic being as programming language. This system realizes not only the basic GIS functions, such as data input/output, graphic operation and editing, but also professional analysis models, such as inquiry statistics, subject map analysis and specialty application function, which are suitable for characteristics of underground pipelines. This system basically meets the demand of information management of the University campus pipelines, which provides not only good service for department of infrastructural construction management, but also assistant decision-making reference for campus layout and engineering construction, practical value is thus achieved.
