Xi'an is not only an ancient capital where the historical culture is deep, but also a modernized city full of vitality. The residential area in the city is urban organism and an organic component of the urban style and features, the residential area not only occupies very large proportion in the land use in the city, at the same time its special characteristics is also an epitome reflecting the general city's characteristics, it will influence the image of a city directly. Eliel Saarinen once said " City's improvement should obviously begin from solving the house and residential environment problem ". The study on organic forms of the residential area is an important component which the whole city studies.The thesis carries on research to the residential area in the city in terms of texture, from the investigation of current situation to the model residential area for every periods after the fifties of the 20th century of main urban area of Xi'an, analyzing, researching and describing the characteristic textures of the residential area for every period, its form, development, characteristic, the relation etc., the objective is to attempt to find the system of its development.The thesis mainly explains the residential area after the liberation of Xi'an, to build the development course and do certain retrospect, have summed up the current situation of residential area in the Xi'an city, and the relation with city.Finally, through the index quantitative analysis of 29 model residential areas that are chosen to different period, in the different living environment, the thesis analyses and concludes about the main factors influencing the texture to form and develop in the residential area at the same time.
