Chinese traditional dwelling house, which being taken as a rich cultural heritage of domestic architecture culture, is an organic product of adaptation to the local climate and other natural conditions, reflecting the ideology of the harmony of man and nature. Its generation, evolvement and development are resulted from the long-term adaptation to the natural environment. It is unique for the multiplicity of the form, the refinement of the construct, and the harmony with the nature. The significance of research on the Chinese traditional dwelling house lies in not only the protection, propagation and inheritance of the regional culture, but also the summarization and refinement of these plain senses and technological experiences of dwelling houses, which were transformed and reconstructed to meet the needs of the development of modern dwelling civilization through combination with modern science and technology. Therefore using the natural ventilation reasonably is the important embodiment of ecological characteristic of traditional dwelling house.This paper simulated the wind environment of Yi minority nationality traditional dwelling house in the case of the natural ventilation, compared the analysis results with measured data and verified the validity of CFD method. Based on that, the wind environment of new Yi minority nationality traditional dwelling house and green Yaodong cave dwellings of the northern part of Shanxi province were simulated in particular in which the influence parameters, such as the height of the wall in the yard,the dimension of the yard, the position of accessorial building in the yard, the width of ventilation opening and the height of the wall on the Yaodong cave dwellings, were considered. The analytical results indicate that the new Yi minority nationality traditional dwelling house and green Yaodong cave dwellings of the northern part of Shanxi province have good indoor ventilation effects, clear ventilation path, direct and fluent ventilation, wide ventilation region and small vortex. On all accounts, the ventilation performance of new traditional dwelling house has improved greatly comparing with the old one. After synthesizing the simulated results, the design recommendations are brought forward. This paper tries to combine the theory and practice in order to provide theoretical basis for dwelling designing.The wind environment of traditional dwelling house could be predicted using CFD software. According to the simulated results, the design is compared and analyzed and adjusted, which adequately embody the control of the architectural design process and the prediction of built environment. Therefore the application prospect of CFD numerical simulation is very wide.
