It is urgent for the designers to improve the performance of refrigeration and air conditioning appliances, such as freezer-refrigerators, room air conditioners, etc.. Under the timely background of the CFCs phase-out, new green refrigerants are used in the traditional appliances and the matching problem is consequently occurred in the process of design. Therefore, an advanced approach to the optimal matching of refrigeration and air conditioning appliances is necessary for energy and material savings.The current developing mode of refrigeration and air conditioning appliances can be concluded as"experience+experiment+theoretical prediction". In fact, experience and experiment are used dominantly. But the empirical method is not always reliable because of its limited available range. The experimental means is direct and reliable, however, lots of experiments will lead to the high costing and the long design period. System simulation on the computer is an effective and promising approach to modern product design. At present, although the system simulation technique has been fairly developed, the users are not satisfied with its prediction precision and flexibility in applications because the actual refrigeration and air conditioning appliances are so complicated and diverse. In order to improve the system simulation technique and develop practical simulation software, artificial intelligence (AI) has been introduced and studied in the work.As a new approach, model-based intelligent simulation of refrigeration and air conditioning appliances is presented in this work. The author tries to extract the qualitative kernel of the classical mathematical models which have been successfully developed for decades. Meanwhile, AI technique, which is good at dealing with the complicated problems in the reality, is introduced into the classical system simulation.
