Nowadays engineers can not thoroughly understand the design of steel-concrete composite beams, because the regulation for steel-concrete composite beams in code for steel structure design(GB50017-2003)is too simple and somewhat obscure and the explanation is not clear enough. After the scrutiny of large amount of papers in this field, an elastic method and a plastic method for composite beams and continuous composite ones were systematically generalized in this paper, including simply supported beams and continuous composite beams with self-weight composition , non self-weight composition, full and partial composition. Methods for the design of all kinds of composite beams are introduced in details, including the model for internal force analysis , the range of moment redistribution for continuous beams , the width-thickness ratio limit of steel slab members associated with all kinds of design methods, deflection calculation, strength design of cross-section, stability of lower flange of steel beams in negative moment area, strength of shear connectors, distribution of shear connectors and stiffness considering bond-slip etc. Finally, the case of four projects were calculated in details and all kinds of problems that might occur were discussed.
