Subgrade structure, as the main structure of railway construction, should have enough carrying capacity and deformation resistance capacity, can stand repetitive strength of the vehicle load without structural destruction and excessive sedimentation and deformation, meanwhile, it should have preferable penetration resistance capacity and water stability, to reduce water immersion and intenerate effect, therefore maintaining long time stability of the subgrade.The high speed railway has strict requres for filling.In Japan and Germany ,A species and part of B species filling are used for filing subgrade in principle.In China,considering the lack of high quality filling. it is difficult to use high quality filling for whole circuitry.So it is important for railway struction in China to extend avalible fillings by reserch C species fillings and it's improved fillings.Red beds is a special filling contained coarse-grained soil. It's grain is easy to be shattered and the strength is very low. Whenever it comes across water, it will become easier to be pulverized, which shows its difference from the common filling.We should avoid to using this kind of filling according to the current criterion. However, the Sui-Yu express railway engineering in province of Sichuan area mainly consists of a lot of red beds. If it can be used to fill the subgrade, it will save up large of engineering investments. At the same time,it can also save on the land to be used to construct the railway. In addition, it can protect the surrounding from pollution.This paper is accomplished under this background. It researches mostly the physical and strengthen characteristic of red beds scatter and it's improved scatter.It makes particular study on the results of tests by performing laboratory tests of tamping,triaxial shear,CBR,swell persent,and so on ,and masters the strenth , deformation and water-stability characteristics of red beds scatter.Based on the results of the soil tests,this paper also makes slope stability and subsiding of subgrade filled by redbeds,and testifies that the red beds filling meets the requres of high speed railway.
