The high speed railway has strict requires to filling of subgrade. In China, consideration the lack of high quality filling. It is difficult to use high quality filling for whole circuitry. So it is important for railway construction to extend available fillings by research C species fillings and improved fillings.Date indicates that red mudstone is easily pulverized, weathering, intenerated across water, this filling is sensitive to quantity of containing water, it is special filling , characteristic of engineering is bad, it is filling of C species. The characteristic don't meet the requirement for subgrade filling of high speed railway , it should be improved . improved red mudstone is used for the filling of the new Sui-Yu railway to test deformation of subgrade .It researches the physical and strength characteristic of improved red mudstone, and settlement characteristic of subgrade with filled red mudstone and improved red mudstone. It makes particular study on the results of tests by performing laboratory tests of tamping, triaxial shear, centrifugal model , and master strength and settlement characteristic of red mudstone and improved red mudstone. The result of test indicates the red mudstone and improved red mudstone filling meet the requirement of high speed railway, and subgrade settlement is decreased with filling of improved red mudstone.Based on the results of the soil tests, this paper analyses subgrade settlement by numerical calculation, The result of caculation almost accords with the result of test.
