The research of intelligent design and computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) can provide good technical background for the development and application of conceptual design of mechanical product. The research on the agent theory, web technologies provide open design platform for cooperative design. With the current research production in artificial intelligence, knowledge engineering, CSCD and web technologies, we can merge intelligent conceptual design and CSCW, and build intelligent conceptual design system and its cooperative work model. This will enhance the quality and affiance of design mostly, and improve the automation and intelligence of design. In this thesis, investigation actuality and key issues in conceptual design of mechanical product are analyzed systemically. While intelligent conceptual design system and knowledge representation as research target, knowledge processing technique related to intelligent conceptual design are discussed, which include the method of Object-Oriented Knowledge Representation (OOKR), the approach of knowledge acquisition based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and knowledge reasoning technique. The method for knowledge integration is discussed. Now eXtensible Markup Language (XML) can realize to represent conceptual design knowledge in distributed environment. The technique of intelligent conceptual design based on XML is discussed, and it can implement the knowledge representation method based on XML, parse XML documents by Document Object Model (DOM) parser, distill knowledge from it and realize rules reasoning and problem-solving. So symbolic and quantitative design knowledge can be integratedly representated and used to reason, and distributed design knowledge can be shared and reused. In this thesis, a CSCW model based on Multi-Agent System (MAS) supporting intelligent conceptual design is put forward, which can be used to solve the distributed complex conceptual design problems. The work principle, structure framework, design Agent model and workflow of the model are discussed. The distributed knowledge representation, collision detection and dealing mechanism, and agent communication mechanism are introduced, which is considered as key techniques to support the model. Based on the above research, an intelligent conceptual design system based on XML (XICDS) is investigated and implemented. It is applied to the cooperative design of the gearbox of milling machine.
