There are numerous lakes and rivers in China. A huge amount of sediment deposited there has caused severe problems. The sediment reduces the ability of discharging and storing flood water of rivers and lakes and threatens the life and property of people, so the dredging in Yangtse and Yellow River has become a long-term and arduous mission.Cutter suction dredgers and trailing suction hopper dredgers have been widely used in many dredging projects, such as dredging in rivers and lakes, construction of ports and waterways. Both of these two kinds of hydraulic dredgers use pump and pipeline to transport slurry. The dynamic behavior of slurry transport attracts wide attention, because it relates directly with the safety and economy of dredging operation. On the basis of mathematic description of pump and slurry transport pipeline, a model of dynamic simulation of pump starting, water filling and slurry transport has been established by using Visual Basic. Slurry transport by single pump and two pumps in series have been simulated aimed at different soil properties, the changing processes of a series of parameters, such as pump revolution, head, diesel engine torque and power, vacuum pressure at pump entrance, line velocity in pipeline and so on, have been gained, and it has been found that some unfavorable phenomena may occur in dredging, like cavitation, overload, line velocity below the critical velocity and so on. The work of this paper will help promote the further understanding of slurry transport and offer useful references for the safe and efficient dredging.
