Considering the requirement of gear indexing cam machining, this dissertationdeals with some key issues relevant to the transmission principle, gearing principleand NC machining of the gear indexing cam mechanism with the aid of differentialgeometry and space curve gearing theory. Then a solution of CAD/CAM of the camis put forward. The following work has been completed. Based on analysis of transmission, structure and profile formation principle of thecam, the basic kinematic formula of the gear indexing cam mechanism isdeduced. Furthermore the space meshing contact equation of cam profile and theroller is formulated. With the idea in the basic design parameters of the cam mechanism, thegeometrical and kinematic model of the cam is developed and the maingeometrical dimensions and the data of meshing points are obtained directly. Themethod of the computer-aided design of the gear indexing cam with aid of thecommercial CAD software is also discussed. According to the transmission principle and the setting accuracy, the geometricinformation of CAD software is called by use of the developed interface, and thecutter location data are calculated. Then the tool path is verified by means ofsimulation. Thus the integrated CAD/CAM of the gear indexing cam has beenrealized. After analyzing the kinematic relationship of machining gear indexing cam byusing variable diameter cutter, the basic machining principle of tool compensateis discussed and the compensation formula is deduced. Finally the method ofcomputer aid programming for variable diameter cutter machining is presentedby virtual of the commercial software.
